Visited by more than ten million people every year, Fort Lauderdale is known as the "Venice of America" for the 165 miles of waterways within the city which can be toured via gondola. There are dozens of marinas, hundreds of upscale boutiques, and thousands of restaurants and night clubs, which have made its cruise ship port a popular stop with all the major lines. For most visitors, "beaches!" is the shouted answer to the question "why are you visiting Fort Lauderdale?" Within the city limits there are over seven miles of beaches ranging from the low-key village vibe of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea to the chiq boutiques of Fort Lauderdale beach. Swimming, sandcastle building, volleyball, water skiing, and snorkeling the reefs are the most popular activities, and specialized tour operators even offer a chance to swim with dolphins! The Everglades are also a fascinating outdoor destination which can be best experienced on airboat tours.

If there's a rainy afternoon during their vacation, Fort Lauderdale visitors don't fret. There are tons of indoor attractions to keep them occupied. Those missing the beach might visit the International Swimming Hall of Fame, where ten world records were set. For art lovers, there are dozens of local galleries and respected museums, including the Girl's Club, which is dedicated to women's contemporary art. For kids there's the hands-on displays and IMAX theater at the Museum of Discovery while car lovers will enjoy the Antique Car Museum. There are several major malls in Fort Lauderdale including the Galleria, which is packed with upscale retailers, fine dining, and spas, and the Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop, which is the largest flea market in the South. The city's outdoor shopping district, Las Olas Boulevard, is where you'll find all the most unique boutiques, from flower shops to bookstores specializing in ocean navigation charts.
